Mariah Carey possesses a multi-octave vocal range, reportedly spanning five octaves. The average human vocal range is three octaves with the guidance of an expert, states vocal coach Janet Edwards.

Humans use only a portion of their vocal powers, and most classically trained singers are within this vocal range. The 1950s Hollywood star Yma Sumac, who died in 2008, sang in more than four octaves and was considered a phenomenon. Janet Edwards stresses, however, that a good singing voice is about more than range. Eloquence is successfully expressed with the use of seven to 10 notes, which is the typical range for a pop song.
