What is a backfeed generator?
By Forinfos - 02/08/2025 - 0 comments
Backfeeding is the process of connecting a portable generator to a home's electrical system to provide power during outages. Backfeeding a generator is dangerous, and should not be performed by anyone other than a professional electrician. This wiring setup is often in violation of local electrical and construction codes.
The danger in backfeeding generators comes from adding extra voltage to the utility lines. The additional power can be deadly to utility workers doing repairs on power lines far from the generator. Backfeeding can destroy a generator, and there is also a risk of fire and explosion. Fumes may be a danger if the generator is left running in an enclosed area.
