Basilisk lizards are omnivores with a diet that consists mainly of flowers and insects, with a few small vertebrates thrown in for good measure, including birds, snakes and their eggs. Its range includes Central America and parts of South America, where it is typically found in low-lying areas.
One distinguishing feature of the basilisk is its ability to sprint on water. Its hind feet are equipped with fringes that spread out when the lizard's foot hits the water. In a sense, the lizard uses its legs in much the same way that a windmill works, creating pockets of air as it goes.
