"Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison is a portion of the novel "Invisible Man." It was published as a short story in 1947, five years before the full novel was published.
"Battle Royal" is the opening chapter of the book, and it depicts a man and his grandfather discussing what it means to be an "invisible man" among whites and how to overcome this idea. The entire novel was a contemporary commentary on racism and race relations in the United States following the Civil War period. "Invisible Man" won the National Book Award in 1953 and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in 1992, as it was well received by critics.
