The way women in Hawaii wear flowers in their hair is based directly on marital status. For those who are single, flowers are usually tucked behind the right ear. For those who are married or in a relationship, they are often adorned near the left ear.

The yellow hibiscus, which is Hawaii's official state flower, is one of the many used hair accessories on the island. Aside from individual flowers, it is also customary for Hawaiians to wear leis, or garlands made of several flowers. Shells, seeds and nuts are commonly added to leis, especially for rare occasions. Refusing to wear a lei is considered an insult to most Hawaiian natives.
