BHP stands for Brake Horse Power. It refers to the amount of pure power that a motor generates before any auxiliary components that may slow down the motor are taken into account.
The term Brake Horse Power comes from the braking systems that were used in the design of early 20th century automobiles. These vehicles were equipped with a hand brake that could be used to slow them down. During manufacturing, this brake was used to test the amount of torque that the motor was able to generate, ensuring that the level of torque was within acceptable limits for that vehicle
