The BHP in BHP Billiton stands for Broken Hill Proprietary. BHP Billiton is a company headquartered in Australia. Broken Hill is the name of the town where the company's first mine was developed.
BHP was incorporated in 1885 and is a leader in the mining of lead, zinc, copper, iron ore, silver and oil. Billiton was established in 1851 in Indonesia and also became a leader in the mining and oil exploration industries. The two companies came together in June of 2001. As of 2014, BHP Billiton is a world leader in diversified areas of commodities and is led by Chief Executive Officer Graham Kerr.
