A 2-pence piece measures 25.9 millimeters, or 1.019 inches in diameter. The coin weighs 7.12 grams, or 0.251 ounces, and is made of copper, zinc and tin. The 2-pence piece coin was introduced in 1971 and is used in the United Kingdom as legal currency to purchase goods and services.

Due to its thin steel core, the 2-pence coin is magnetic. From 1971 to 1982, in order to avoid confusion with the 1/2-pence and 1-pence coins that were then in circulation, the mint imprinted 2-pence coins with the word "new" on the reverse. The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
