As of 2015, the world's largest aircraft carrier, the USS George H. W. Bush, measures 332.8 meters long, providing a 4.5 acre deck that accommodates more than 60 aircraft. The full load displacement is 97,000 tons, and the ship reaches 20 stories high. The carrier houses approximately 5,000 personnel.
The USS George H. W. Bush was the last Nimitz class aircraft carrier the U.S. Navy commissioned, in 2009. There are 10 of these ships, and the first was put into service in 1975. Two nuclear reactors power the ships, giving them a top speed of just over 30 knots. The Gerald R. Ford class carriers are due to replace the Nimitz class beginning in 2015.
