Blackberries grow in the wild and can be cultivated in USDA hardiness zones five through ten. Blackberries prefer sandy acidic soil and full-sun exposure.
Although a favorite of home gardeners because they're easy to grow and beloved for making jams and jellies, blackberries are also cultivated commercially with Mexico being the leading producer. Mexico produces nearly all of the off season crop of blackberries for all of North America and Europe. In the United States, Oregon is the top blackberry producer commercially, producing some 56.1 million pounds of blackberries in 2009, which is the latest year for which data is available.
