The blind cave fish, or Mexican tetra, is primarily carnivorous and eats aquatic insects, crustaceans and smaller fish. It also feeds on snails, worms and even plant matter. The Mexican tetra lives in bodies of fresh water in the southern United States and in Central America.
Two variations of Mexican tetra exist: a cave-dweller and a surface-dweller. Some scientists believe that they are two different species, although both types are characterized by a fork-shaped tail, a small dorsal fin and large teeth. The Mexican tetra forms schools of hundreds or thousands of individual fish. Short-lived, this animal develops quickly and is able to breed within months following its birth.
