A Body Mass Index (BMI) level of 30.0 or higher is considered obese for adults, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The same BMI formula is used for both adult men and women of all ages.
Despite the use of the same BMI formula to assess body fatness in both adult men and women of all ages, at the same BMI women, typically have more body fat than men and the elderly typically have more body fat than younger adults, notes the CDC. In the case of athletes, BMI might be higher due to increased weight from muscle mass.
