When Boy Scouts sell popcorn, they raise money for things such as new tents or scholarships to reduce the cost of camp for troop members. Some of the money goes to individual units, and a portion goes to the governing council.

The Old Colony Council of Canton, Massachusetts, states that, depending on how much they sell, up to 40 percent of popcorn proceeds goes to individual units. The council puts 24 percent of the money toward camp programs and physical improvements to its camps. The Boy Scouts of America requires that troops raising money through popcorn sales must use the proceeds in a way that benefits all troop members equally.
