The Brittany spaniel is bred specifically for hunting woodcocks, rabbits and partridges. Generally, it is a hunting dog used for small game animals, especially waterfowl.

The Brittany Spaniel is intelligent and free-thinking, meaning it can adjust to the needs of the moment. They are pack animals, though, which means that it needs to know that its master is the leader and have that reinforced consistently. They are also of medium build, 30-40 pounds, making them easy to transport. Their biggest problem as a breed is, if they are not regularly exercised both physically and mentally, they can get either nervous or timid.
