The Brothers Grimm version of "Cinderella," originally titled "Aschenputtel," is a short story first published in 1812 in an anthology called "Kinder- und Hausmärchen." It is much darker than the Disney version of Cinderella that is familar to most people.
In the Grimm version of "Cinderella," the evil stepsisters both go to great lengths to try to fit into the glass slipper. One cuts off her toes, and the other cuts off her heel. Cinderella also has no fairy godmother. Instead, she plants a tree by her mother's grave and prays to it until a gown appears under the tree for her to wear to a ball.
