BSN stands for a bachelor's of science degree in nursing. It is one of the three common ways to become a registered nurse, the others being an associate’s degree and a diploma program.
A BSN program usually lasts four years and includes clinical experience. Registered nurses must be licensed in the United States, and the process entails completion of an approved program and passing an examination. States have further requirements, and various associations provide specialized certification.
Nurses who are facing intense competition or who see themselves advancing at some point should receive a master's of science in nursing, or MSN.
