The Statue of Liberty was built by a group of French artisans and craftsmen under the direction of sculptor Auguste Bartholdi. Architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, designer Gustave Eiffel, and structural engineer Maurice Koechlin were three prominent members of the group who worked on the project.
The Statue of Liberty was constructed in pieces in Paris, France. The pieces were originally assembled in Paris where the statue was presented to the U.S. Ambassador to France in 1884. The statue was then disassembled and transported to the United States. In the United States, the statue was reassembled on Bedloe Island by a construction crew consisting primarily of new U.S. immigrants.
