Where can you apply for a federal EIN number?

Taxpayers can apply for an EIN online through the IRS website, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The ability to apply by mail or fax is also available using Form SS-4.

Most people prefer to use the EIN online application, explains the IRS. Once the application is complete and submitted, the information is validated online and the EIN is immediately issued. The online application process is available for anyone who has an entity or business whose principal location is within the United States or U.S. territories. Only the general partner, principal officer, trustor, grantor or owner can use the online application, and that individual must have a valid taxpayer identification number.
