Hugo Chavez was born in 1954 in Sabaneta, Venezuela, and graduated from the Venezuelan Academy of Military Sciences when he was 21. After graduation, he was commissioned as an officer and was a member of both counter-insurgency and paratrooper units. In 1992, he led a coup against the president of Venezuela that ultimately failed. He was sentenced to imprisonment, was eventually pardoned, and began a career in politics shortly thereafter.
