It is possible to buy R22 refrigerant online, but there are some restrictions because it is an ozone-depleting refrigerant. Environmental Protection Agency 609 Technician certification and a Statement of Intent is required to buy containers of R22 that are 20 pounds and larger.

New air conditioning products are not allowed to use R22 refrigerant under new Environmental Protection Agency regulations. These new regulations went into effect in 2010 as part of the phase out plan to end the use of this type of ozone depleting substance. Since 2010, systems that use R22 and require repair are now repaired with reclaimed R22 that has been reprocessed from damaged systems to original quality.
