Can cats eat bread?

Cats can eat small amounts of plain, cooked bread but should not eat raw bread dough made with live yeast. Plain white or wheat bread is fine, both commercially prepared or home baked. Any cooked bread fed to a cat should be free of nuts or fruit that could be dangerous.

Cats cannot eat raw dough made with live yeast because the yeast and the warm environment of the cat's stomach can cause the dough to continue rising. The breakdown of the yeast will release alcohol, which can lead to alcohol poisoning. Other complications from eating raw dough include seizures, coma or death.
