Can cats eat cheese?

Many cats are lactose intolerant and therefore should not eat cheese. According to Animal Planet, as many kittens grow into adulthood, they become lactose intolerant, which makes it difficult to digest any form of dairy product, such as cheese, yogurt, butter or sour cream.
Cheese is generally lower in lactose than other dairy products; however, cheese can still make cats sick when it is consumed. When lactose-intolerant cats consume cheese, they may experience issues such as diarrhea or vomiting. While cats often enjoy the taste of cheese and other dairy products and some cats do not experience negative side effects from consuming them, these foods should not be an essential part of a cat's diet.
