Can dog fleas bite humans?

Although dog fleas prefer to live on furry animals, they do bite humans if given the chance. Like most fleas, they are opportunistic feeders and feed on human blood as well as that of other mammals.

Dog fleas are less common than cat fleas, so there is less chance of them biting a human; however, despite the name, dog fleas can live on cats and other furry species. Most humans are only at risk of flea bites if they handle animals with a flea infestation. Fleas can also bite people who hike through tall grass or underbrush or whose homes become infested with the insects.
