Can humans eat dog food?

Humans can eat dog food; however, doing so is potentially harmful. Some dog foods are made with human-grade ingredients, while others contain animal-grade products that are not beneficial or safe for humans.

The FDA regulates pet food as it does human food, but with less restrictive guidelines. While there are standards that should be followed, not all dog food companies are in compliance with FDA regulations. Dog food can carry germs or contaminants that are safe for dogs but can lead to harmful disease or medical conditions for humans. The main concern for humans is raw poultry, fish and animal products used in the making of dog food.
