Can dogs eat ham bones?

Even bones as large as a ham bone should not be given to dogs, as the dogs could choke and possibly die while chewing on any size of bone. Veterinarians at the FDA recommend only giving edible and recreational bones to dogs, as opposed to cooked bones.
Bones that have undergone a cooking process are brittle and may splinter and come apart. Risks with a dog eating cooked bones, such as ham bones, include broken teeth, lodging of the bone in the windpipe, lodging of the bone in the stomach or esophagus, mouth injury and constipation stemming from bone fragments. Raw, recreational bones, such as a bison femur, are acceptable for dogs to chew.
