According to PetSci, while an excess amount of bag candy licorice could cause high blood pressure, muscle weakness and liver damage, a small amount of licorice will not harm a dog. On the contrary, Dogs Naturally Magazine explains that the consumption of licorice root actually has health benefits for dogs.
Dogs Naturally Magazine states that licorice given to a dog can be used as an immune system booster. It can also be used to treat urinary tract infections, inflammation, digestion, arthritis and joint pain. The licorice root should be given to a dog for only two weeks at a time. Additionally, licorice root should not administered to dogs that are pregnant or have diabetes.
