Can you e-file your California state tax forms from home?

As of September 2015, the State of California Franchise Tax Board has temporarily suspended California taxpayers from creating new online accounts with which to e-file, according to the board's website. However, individuals who already have accounts can still use them to file.

Online registration for new accounts begins in January 2016, the Tax Board explains. In the meantime, the board's Online Filing Options webpage lists free and fee-based e-file providers. Some of the free filing alternatives require taxpayers to meet specific income requirements. The Options page also lets taxpayers find local authorized e-file providers by inputting zip codes or city names.
