Can you feed pork bones to dogs?

According to the Michigan Humane Society, it is dangerous to feed any type of bones to dogs; this includes pork bones. Small pieces or bone splinters can cause illness or death in dogs.

The Michigan Humane Society explains that dogs can swallow small bones, causing blockages and damaging the intestinal tract. Bone splinters can cut a dog's intestinal wall, causing hemorrhaging and infection. Bits of undigested bone can become impacted and cause a blockage in the dog's digestive system as well, particularly in older dogs. If not caught in time, digestive blockages can be fatal. While dogs have a need to chew, good alternatives to bones include chew toys and an occasional rawhide chew.
