Regular-strength Pepto Bismol can be given to a dog to soothe an upset stomach. The recommended dosage is 0.5 to 1 milliliter of liquid Pepto Bismol for each pound of the dog's weight every six to eight hours.
Owners are advised to check with the veterinarian prior to administering Pepto Bismol to a dog. Dogs with bleeding problems and dogs that are pregnant or nursing should not take Pepto Bismol.
While side effects are uncommon, Pepto Bismol can cause the color of the tongue to darken. Stool color may be affected as well, appearing black, gray or green. Pepto Bismol can interfere with evaluations of abdominal X-rays and can result in inaccurate urine test results.
