Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and can be found in a wide variety of organic and inorganic compounds, including water and sugars, and in the mass of stars. Hydrogen is the most basic element in the periodic table and contains one proton and one electron.
Nearly 75 percent of the mass of the universe is hydrogen. While it is relatively rare on Earth in its pure form, it can be found in volcanic gases and natural gases. Hydrogen can be scientifically prepared in several ways, including decomposition of hydrocarbons and electrolysis of water. It is used in industry to synthesize ammonia and hydrochloric acid, process fossil fuels, reduce metal ores and make fuel cells.
