Seborrheic keratoses should be removed by a medical professional, according to Patient. They are always benign and only need to be removed for cosmetic purposes or because they cause discomfort when rubbing against clothing or jewelry.

Physicians remove seborrheic keratoses by scraping them off the skin using a curette, sometimes in conjunction with electrocautery, in which the keratosis is burned off, as WebMD explains. Other methods used to remove seborrheic keratoses are cryosurgery, in which liquid nitrogen is used to freeze away the skin growths, or ablation, in which lasers are used to vaporize the keratosis. The type of removal process performed depends in part on the size and thickness of a given keratosis.
