Drivers can renew their licenses in person at a local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office, but not all states provide for renewal online or by mail, as of 2015. Each state has its own DMV website and procedures for driver's license renewal.

It is best to reference the state website for the most updated information and procedures. If online renewal is available, the website provides a list of required documents and procedures that vary from state to state. For example, Washington allows drivers between the ages of 24 and 70 to renew their licenses online by providing their current driver's license number, birth date, final four digits of their Social Security number and eye color.
