When can I return to work after an appendectomy?

Johns Hopkins Medicine does not indicate a time to return to work, stating a doctor advises a patient on the return. The type of surgery and the nature of the person's job affect the return. Some procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning the patient returns home that day.
An open appendectomy involves larger incisions than a laparoscopic procedure. Also, a person's age and overall health prior to the surgery affect his post-surgery recovery. Dr. Buck Parker indicates on his website that a person should not lift more than 15 pounds for six weeks after the surgery. This guideline inhibits someone from performing work roles involving heavy lifting or movement of equipment, supplies or goods.
