Can you use an external hard drive to save game data from an Xbox 360?

Most types of game data can be saved to an Xbox 360 external hard drive. Microsoft sells its own external drive for the system, and there are also aftermarket solutions.
Microsoft's official external drive for the Xbox 360 is a 320GB media hard drive for the S and E versions of the console. It is available through major retailers and from Microsoft's website. Other types of external hard drives can be connected if a 2010 software update to the console's firmware has been installed. Storing content from the Xbox Live Marketplace, however, requires the creation of a separate 16GB partition.
