Although pet stores sell leashes that fit guinea pigs, Guinea Pig Today does not recommend using a leash on a guinea pig, as their bodies are delicate and prone to injury when under the force of a leash. The risk of losing the guinea pig is also a factor.
The guinea pig, or cavy, is a large rodent that originated in the Andes. Although they are popular pets in the United States and elsewhere, guinea pigs are a staple of diets in South American cultures. Guinea pigs typically grow up to 10 inches in length and can weigh 2 pounds or more. The guinea pig has contributed much to scientific advancement due to its role as a frequent subject in experimentation.
