When is Canada Day?

Canada Day is observed on July 1st. It celebrates the creation of the British North America Act in 1867, which formed the new country of Canada. In French, the day is called Fete du Canada.

Canada Day became a statutory holiday by federal law in 1879. It was originally known as Dominion Day, but was renamed Canada Day with the passing of the Canada Act on October 27, 1982.

Canada Day is celebrated in all Canadian provinces and territories, and most businesses are closed. Common events held on this day include parades, festivals, concerts, barbecues and fireworks. Citizenship ceremonies are also generally held on this day.
