Sacramento is the capital city of California. Incorporated in 1850, Sacramento became the state capital in 1854, when the California state legislature moved there from Benicia.
The first capital of the state of California was San Jose, where the legislature held sessions in 1850 and 1851. In 1852, the legislature moved to Vallejo, where it would reconvene in January 1853. However, upset at the unpleasant living conditions and weather, the delegates decided to reconvene a month later in Benicia. When this too proved insufficient for the delegates, the legislature decided to hold its 1854 session in Sacramento, which remains the state capital as of 2015.
