Monrovia is the capital of Liberia. The city is located on a peninsula between Liberia's Atlantic coastline and the Mesurado River. As of 2014, it is the largest city in the country and has a population of approximately 1 million people.

Monrovia dates back to 1822 and was named after U.S. President James Monroe, who implemented a plan to resettle freed African-American slaves in Liberia. At the heart of the city is Capitol Hill, where Liberia's major civic institutions such as the Temple of Justice and the Executive Mansion are located.

Monrovia is twinned with Taipei, capital city of the Asian island nation Taiwan.
