The city of Olympia is the capital of the state of Washington. Situated on Budd Inlet, at the southern end of Puget Sound, the city was first named Smither or Smithster after its first two American settlers, Levi Smith and Edmund Sylvester, who arrived there in 1846.
The city was first incorporated in 1859. Olympia was the first provisional capital of the territory of Washington and has been the state's only capital since Washington achieved statehood in 1889. In addition to being the home of the state government, Olympia is also the county seat of Thurston County. The city covers 19.68 miles of total area. Its absolute center is 47°20'N latitude and 120°16.1'W longitude.
