How do you change a windshield wiper motor?

Changing a windshield wiper motor requires using a voltage tester to check its spark and hand tools to remove the unit off of its mounting inside the engine compartment. The mounting location of the wiper motor varies depending on the type of vehicle.
Over time the internal components of a wiper motor will wear down and it will need to be replaced. When this occurs problems arise such as:
- Windshield wipers become stuck
- Wipers do not turn off
- Wipers operate at only one speed
- Wipers do not turn off at the correct angle
The following instructions explain how to safely remove a windshield wiper motor from a vehicle.
- Locate the wiper motor
- Check the wiper fuse
- Disconnect the battery
- Remove wiper arm assembly
- Remove the mounting bolts
- Install the new unit
Open the hood and find the location of the wiper motor. Most cars will have the motor mounted to the firewall of the engine compartment.
Locate the wiper fuse and use a test light to check the spark. Then turn on the car and check the for current from the motor itself. If both areas fail to show proper voltage levels replace the unit.
Disconnect the battery, negative cable first, to avoid shock.
Unbolt the wiper arm assembly from the motor, then proceed to unplug the electrical clip.
Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the motor assembly.
Install the replacement unit and reconnect the wire harness clips and the arm assembly and battery. Then test the unit.
