What is Cheratussin AC syrup used for?

According to Drugs.com, Cheratussin AC is a prescription cough syrup containing the cough suppressant codeine and the expectorant guaifenesin. These two ingredients combined are effective for controlling the symptoms of coughing and chest congestion in patients with upper respiratory infections or colds.
Drugs.com warns that Cheratussin AC can be habit forming if it is misused. Side effects of Cheratussin AC include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, constipation and itching of the skin. Consumption of Cheratussin AC can also impair cognitive functioning. The Food and Drug Administration has categorized Cheratussin AC under Category C, meaning its effect on a human fetus is unknown.
