Is Christmas Eve a holiday?

Christmas Eve is not considered a federal holiday in the United States as of 2014. Because of this, many people have to work on Dec. 24. Christmas Day is a federal holiday in the United States, and most businesses are closed on this day.

Some states offer a partial holiday on Christmas Eve, including Kansas, North Dakota and Virginia. Other states include Christmas Eve as a holiday, namely Michigan, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Texas. Schools in most states close on Christmas Eve, and remain closed through Dec. 26. Public transit and transportation may run on a limited schedule.
