To clean stove burner grates, soak them in warm, soapy water, and scrub with a non-metal soap pad, rinse the grates well, and seal each grate in a plastic bag with a 1/2 cup of household ammonia. Wait overnight, and rinse the grates again, then polish the grates with a soft cloth.
- Soak the grates in hot, soapy water
Let the grates sit in a basin of hot, soapy water for about 15 minutes to loosen burned-on particles.
- Scrub the grates
Scrub the grates with non-metal soap pads to remove the loosened particles.
- Rinse the grates
Hold the grates under running, warm water to remove the soap and dirt.
- Seal the grates in bags with ammonia
Place each partially-cleaned grate in a large plastic bag or container. Add 1/2 cup of household ammonia to each bag or container, and seal the bags with a rubber band or put lids on the containers.
- Let the ammonia work overnight
Leave the grates overnight. The ammonia fumes chemically remove the rest of the grime.
- Rinse the grates
Hold the grates under warm, running water to remove all of the ammonia and any last dirt residue.
- Polish the grates
Dry the grates with a soft cloth. Put the grates back on the stove top.
