The middle latitude zones have warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The climate is often divided into four categories: Mediterranean, humid subtropical, marine west coast and humid continental. The climate is regulated by oceanic bodies, typically experiencing strong prevailing winds and significant weather fronts.

The middle latitude zones encompass Central and Southern Europe, the southeastern and Pacific northwest United States, southern South America and Southeast Asia. The zones stretch from the Tropic of Cancer north to the Arctic Circle, and from the Tropic of Capricorn south to the Antarctic Circle. The Koppen Climate Classification System lists them as category "C."
