The common name for hydrogen oxide is water, and has a chemical formula of H2O. Each molecule of water contains two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. Water can be referred to as dihydrogen monoxide and is also known as oxidane.

At standard temperature and pressure water is a colorless, tasteless liquid. However, it easily transitions from a solid to a liquid to a gas. Its freezing point is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, while its boiling point is only 212 degrees F.

Water is absolutely essential to life on Earth; even a healthy human being can live only a few days without it.
