The most common state of matter is plasma. Plasma makes up approximately 99 percent of visible matter in the universe, as well as most of what is invisible.
In addition to the three other states of matter, solid, liquid and gas, plasma was discovered in 1879 by English physicist Sir William Crookes. Plasma received its namesake from Dr. Irving Langmuir's observation of ionized gas in 1929. Plasma has different applications, ranging from consumer products to waste removal. Additionally, plasma serves as the liquid portion of blood used to maintain blood pressure and provide donations, according to the American Red Cross.
