Plasma is the most common state of matter in the universe. Matter in this state makes up 99 percent of all matter. Most of this plasma is in the form of hydrogen in stars.
The sun contains more than 99 percent of the mass in the solar system. While some of its mass is in a gaseous state, the overwhelming majority is in plasma form. However, baryonic matter, which is made of atoms and subatomic particles, comprises only 4.6 percent of the universe's mass. Dark matter, which is not well understood, makes up 24 percent of the universe's mass, and the remaining 71 percent consists of dark energy, which is a mystery.
