The Copper River runs through south-central Alaska on its way from the Wrangell Mountains to the Gulf of Alaska. It enters the Gulf of Alaska about 30 miles southeast of the small city of Cordova, Alaska.
The river's length is 287 miles, along which it is joined by 13 significant tributaries. Its widest section, at the Copper River Delta, spans 1 mile. Originating from the Copper Glacier on Mount Wrangell, the river begins flowing at the east side of Mount Sanford in the Wrangell Mountains. At Chitina it is joined by the Chitina River and later passes through a narrow gap in the Chugach Mountains.
