Myakka River State Park is located on the western side of the Florida peninsula, east of Sarasota in portions of Sarasota County and Manatee County. It is one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks and first gained its status in the 1930s.
Myakka River State Park is named after the Myakka River that flows through it. The park itself measures about 58 square miles and encompasses diverse ecological terrains. It includes woodlands, pine forests, shrublands, prairies, cypress domes and marshes, and it hosts rare species unique to that location in Florida. The park also has sinkhole that is over 130 feet deep.
