What is the cost of an EIN number?

As of 2015, applying and receiving an EIN number is free, and is part of a complimentary service through the Internal Revenue Service. An application for an EIN number can be done through four different methods, which are online, fax, mail and by telephone.

Application by telephone is specifically open to only international applicants, and the line is open during weekdays between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Time. When applying by fax or mail, applicants need to fill out Form SS-4 with the required information. When applying online, the IRS provides an online application form, and an EIN number is issued if the IRS deems the application valid.
